Connecticut operates 54 separate probate districts, each with its own elected judge. These courts handle estates, trusts, conservatorships, guardianships of minors and persons with intellectual disability, adoptions, name changes, and commitment proceedings. Unlike most states, Connecticut’s probate districts do not follow county lines. Each district serves one or more towns, and jurisdiction depends on where the decedent lived or where the person who is the subject of the proceeding resides.
